October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.

How often should one do a Breast Self-Exam?

Once a month
Breast Self-Exam:

Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month.  Johns Hopkins Medical center states,

“Forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important.”

While mammograms can help you to detect cancer before you can feel a lump, breast self-exams help you to be familiar with how your breasts look and feel so you can alert your healthcare professional if there are any

HOW SHOULD A BREAST SELF-EXAM BE PERFORMED?

1) IN THE SHOWER Using the pads of your fingers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening, or hardened knot. Notice any changes and get lumps evaluated by your healthcare provider.

2) IN FRONT OF A MIRROR Visually inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead.

Look for any changes in the contour, any swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Next, rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match—few women's breasts do, so look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side.

3) LYING DOWN When lying down, the breast tissue spreads out evenly along the chest wall. Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit.

Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

All I wanted is to be a useful mother and yet it's very difficult to achieve that level of useful when you are constantly suffering from unipolar depression. I am afraid of a lot of things and most of the things I fear are contradictory with achieving one and another. I wanted to work full time but I wanted to take care of my son too. I wanted to spend more time with the kid but I am tired of not having enough money to provide for his needs. I honestly don't know which direction to go right now.

THE BODY BEAUTIFUL
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of
God created he him; male and female created he them.

The body beautiful was given by God unto thee
A beautiful woman standing tall yea that’s me
More than any one body part to make me whole
For my strength comes from the inner woman in my soul

Though every now and then I am tested and sent through the fire
Given a trial like breast cancer that makes even the strong have to cry
But from the beauty inside my soul I find the strength to go on
For I know that I am strong and I have a destiny for which I was born

To show others that no matter the test for my faith in God is strong
And I know when He made me I was given more than the breast alone
To make up the essence of the beautiful woman that through self love I have become
So I will just gird up the loins of my mind for I still have a long way in this race to run

But by the grace of God with my shoulders back and my head held up high
I will not waste time in self-pity and shame wondering to myself why
I’ll just play the hand given unto me just watch my speed yea look and you will see
For I realize that this beautiful body given by God is much more then a breast to me
And I have decided to take charge of my own life and make it what I want it to be

So this little stumbling block of a trial that life has seen fit to put in the road to make it steep
Will in nowise cause me to bow for long because the real essence of my beauty is mine to keep
For the image of my beauty comes not from any outward body part standing by itself in sorrow to weep
There is really so much more to it that makes up the inner woman that stand before you so strong
For by the grace of God and the support of family and friends I know that I am not in this race alone
